While teens involved with violence and gang activity do face consequences, the punishments are much more severe once they reach adulthood. In addition to risking your own life, you may be putting your friends and family at risk. Not to mention the potential for years of prison time and lost employment opportunities. But that doesn’t have to be your future. Not with the support available in our community.

While being part of a gang is dangerous, escaping from a gang family may be even more so. Gangs typically don’t want members to leave because there’s a fear of betrayal – that they’ll expose what they know to law enforcement or even a rival gang. While getting out of gang life isn’t easy, it is possible with persistence, support and the right resources.

There are many risk factors that can contribute to adolescents joining a gang. However, resources and supports are available to help gang members and their families turn away from the gang lifestyle. Even though gang involvement may seem like it provides safety, protection and a sense of belonging, the truth is that gangs are dangerous and can limit your future success. Remember, you do have a choice, and there’s a community of support behind you.
