Mental Health Support for Winters in Ohio

By Ashley Jarvis on January 28, 2025

The middle of winter in Ohio can bring on feelings of sadness and seasonal depression. The holidays are behind us, but spring seems far away, especially when the forecast consistently shows freezing temperatures. This is the time of year with the least amount of daylight and many people spend their days indoors. Even with the gloomy atmosphere, there are steps you can take to boost your mood during winter and help treat seasonal depression.

Spend Time in Nature

Spending time outside does wonders to improve mood. Even in winter, there are ways you can enjoy the great outdoors. Going sledding, taking a snowy nature walk or sipping a cup of hot cocoa while sitting in your backyard are all ways to spend time outside in winter. It is important to connect with nature, even when it is chilly out. Get cozy in your favorite warm clothes and spend time outside. An added benefit to being outside is absorbing Vitamin D from the sunshine. Find more information about how nature can improve your mental health.

Remember to Eat Healthy

It is important to eat healthy and nutritious foods during the cold winter months. Soups, steamed vegetables and hot tea all provide warm comfort while also being nourishing. By fueling your body with healthy meals instead of processed foods, it can lead to an uplifted mood. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Connect with Loved Ones

Winter can bring feelings of isolation when we spend so much time indoors. Make time to catch up with friends and family. Even if you can’t meet in person, you can get in touch via phone call or video chat. Talking with people to whom we are close gives us a sense of belonging, which can bring brightness to the dark, cold months.

Stay Active with Exercise

Keep moving during the winter. Even if it is too cold to exercise outside, you can still be active indoors. Take a walk at an indoor walking track, dance to your favorite song in the living room or follow along with an exercise video online. The most important aspect is to have movement regularly.
