By striving to recognize and understand the complex identities and experiences that shape each person, you can be better equipped to become an ally to someone facing discrimination. Below you’ll find helpful resources and tips on being an ally for an LGBTQ+ person of color in Stark County.

If you’re feeling unsure about the best ways to advocate and show your support for an LGBTQ+ person of color, these strategies can help:
- Challenge yourself to be culturally aware and learn about the unique concerns facing LGBTQ+ people of color. Ask them about their cultures and customs that are different than your own.
- Acknowledge the biases these young people may be facing and encourage open discussions where they can share their feelings and experiences without judgment.
- Be transparent about your status as an ally for LGBTQ+ people of color through Safe Zone certification, posters, flags or other visual cues.
- Invite them to get involved with community events and activities where they can be surrounded by positive allies.
- Support zero-tolerance by calling out biased behavior and intervening right away if you witness bullying or harassment.
- Advocate for legislative policies that support the rights of people of color in the LGBTQ+ community.
- Help connect LGBTQ+ people of color with local support groups and affirming agencies.
- Learn about considerations when working with LGBTQ+ students of color.
