Do's and don'ts

If you feel someone you know is at risk for suicide, it can be difficult to know what to do or say. The following guidelines can help you navigate the conversation:

  • Do ask questions, listen and use active eye contact
  • Do reach out for professional support
  • Do show interest and make yourself available
  • Do speak openly in matter-of-fact language
  • Do take action to ensure their safety and stability
  • Do choose your timing carefully
  • Do think about what you want to say ahead of time
  • Don’t act shocked or confused
  • Don’t be judgmental
  • Don’t lecture them about right and wrong
  • Don’t encourage them to do it
  • Don’t keep your concerns to yourself

No matter the cause, thoughts and attempts of suicide are often more widespread than we realize. Fortunately, there are things you can do to protect your friends, family and yourself:

  • Be there for those you believe might be at risk
  • Engage in open and honest conversations
  • Know the signs and be on the lookout
  • Report suicidal content you see online
  • Spread awareness of hotlines and support resources
